Exciting Opportunity to Support Our Community: Join UU Wausau in the Cold Weather Shelter Program!
We are honored to announce that UU Wausau is joining a community-wide effort to provide warmth, safety, and support to our neighbors experiencing homelessness during extreme cold this winter. In partnership with the Wausau Police Department, Catholic Charities, Bridge Clinic, the City of Wausau, and several area faith organizations, we are stepping up to host individuals in need of shelter on the coldest nights.
How We’re Helping
When temperatures drop below 15°F and existing shelters reach capacity, UU Wausau will open Walker Hall to host up to 15 guests on the following weeks:
- December 8-14
- January 5-11
- February 2-8
- March 2-8
During these weeks, we will provide a warm space, light meals, and compassionate care. Supplies, such as cots, linens, and scrubs, will be provided by the Wausau Police Department, and Catholic Charities will oversee guest admissions and ensure safety.
How You Can Help
This effort relies on volunteers to make it a success! We need helping hands to:
- Staff Overnight Shifts: Volunteers are needed to be on-site during our hosting weeks (either for the whole night or in shifts). Two volunteers must always be present.
- Prepare Light Meals: Help by preparing or serving a simple dinner (e.g., soup and sandwiches) and grab-and-go breakfast items (e.g., soft cereal bar and coffee).
- Be Trained: We will provide training to all volunteers in partnership with Tracy Rieger, Wausau Police Department’s Community Outreach Specialist.
Whether you have a few hours or can stay overnight, your support is invaluable.
Why This Matters
This program is a tangible way for us to live our values and make a meaningful difference. Models like this have been successful in communities across the nation and are often among the most rewarding and cherished initiatives for those involved. It’s an incredible opportunity to extend love and support to our neighbors in need.
