SUMMARY:Art & Soul Saturday | Summer Art Hangout

SUMMARY:Taste of Soul [Matters]
DESCRIPTION:Are you searching for a way to deepen your spiritual journey and connections within our community? Or have you been curious about our small groups but not sure if you are ready to commit? Join us in Yawkey Hall after Sunday’s service for a special session to try out Soul Matters. \n\n\n\nDuring Taste of Soul\, you’ll be introduced to the Soul Matters program and how it is structured\, use the Soul Matters materials\, experience a Soul Matters session\, and have any questions about our small groups answered.  \n\n\n\nSo whether you’re new to our community or looking to further your spiritual journey\, this session is the perfect place to start. \n\n\n\nRSVPs are appreciated\, but not required. Contact our Director of Religious Education to sign up\, request the Soul Matters packet in advance of the meeting\, or with questions. \n\n\n\nWhat is a Soul Matters Small Group?\n\n\n\nSoul Matters Small Groups consist of 6-10 people\, who commit to meet monthly from September – June to share their reflections and experiences with a monthly theme. \n\n\n\nEach month\, participants receive a packet filled with readings\, questions\, and exercises related to that month’s theme\, and they choose a question and/or exercise from the packet that speaks to them\, spending time “walking with” it\, allowing it to challenge and inspire them. \n\n\n\nThen\, during their group’s meeting\, rather than providing answers and analysis to the questions\, each person’s sharing focuses on a story or experience about how their chosen question or exercise led them to a new and personal insight. \n\n\n\nThis approach of reflection\, sharing\, listening\, holding space\, and engaging in regular spiritual practice is an opportunity to grow deeper spiritually and as a community by supporting each other\, offering witness\, and participating together.

SUMMARY:Summer Religious Education
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, our Religious Education program brings the spirit of forest school and gratitude for the interdependent web of life right to our church grounds. Through hands-on play\, nature-based activities\, and creative exploration\, kids will deepen their connection to the natural world\, even in the middle of the city. \n\n\n\nEach session encourages children to slow down\, notice the life all around them\, and practice care\, cooperation\, and curiosity. We’ll explore\, build\, imagine\, and play – nurturing both wonder and community along the way. \n\n\n\nWe’ll gather in the lobby before heading outside. Please dress for the weather (sunscreen\, hats\, light jackets for cool mornings\, etc.). In case of rain or extreme heat\, we’ll bring the fun indoors. \n\n\n\nThis program is designed for children in Preschool through 5th grade\, but older kids are welcome too. All are invited to grow\, play\, and connect with the world around them!

SUMMARY:Creativity Matters
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Creativity Matters invites us to explore the season through creative practice. Summer opens the door to looseness and spontaneity – longer days\, shifting routines\, and the joyful unpredictability of adventures big and small. In the midst of that playful chaos\, we’re invited to slow down and reconnect with ourselves\, with others\, and with the world around us. Creativity becomes a way to delight in the messiness\, to notice unexpected beauty\, and to celebrate how connection often shows up in surprising\, imperfect\, and wonderfully human ways. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterconnection\n\n\n\nAugust’s Creativity Matters theme is “Interconnection.” This month\, we’ll explore how creativity helps us notice the threads that connect us to each other\, to the world around us\, and to our own inner lives. How art invites us to see how seemingly separate pieces can come together to form something whole\, how it helps us find beauty in both our individuality and our shared belonging\, and how it reminds us that the connection between them isn’t about perfection\, it’s about honoring every part of the story. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for the following projects*\, or you are welcome to bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nScrap Collage: Create a collage from scraps and found materials\, and as you arrange and layer your pieces\, notice how separate elements come together to form a connected whole.\n\n\n\nPersonal Puzzle Art: Decorate blank puzzle pieces to represent the many facets of yourself – your interests\, quirks\, identities\, favorite things\, and even your rough edges. Each piece reflects how each part of your unique story connects to form the whole you.\n\n\n\nMandala Weaving: Create a vibrant mandala by weaving fabric scraps\, yarn\, and string through a plastic mesh disc. As you layer colors and textures in circular patterns\, you’ll build a design that symbolizes how individual threads come together to form a connected whole.\n\n\n\n\nDuring the summer months\, we will not have Creativity Matters packets\, but you can sign up to be part of the mailing list to start receiving them in the fall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Creativity Matters?\n\n\n\nOur Creativity Matters group helps community members engage in monthly themes and explore spiritual growth through creative expression. \n\n\n\nIt’s all about allowing our intuition and imagination to guide us\, not just our logic and reflective minds. Think of it as making room for your right brain to dance with your left brain. \n\n\n\nCreativity Matters is a high school and adult group designed for everyone — no experience or artistic skill is required! Just bring a playful spirit and adventurous attitude.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChaos\n\n\n\nJuly’s Creativity Matters theme is “Chaos and Order.” Together\, we’ll explore how creativity lives at the intersection of these forces\, how chaos can spark new ideas\, and how order can give them form. Creativity often begins with a messy swirl of thoughts\, feelings\, or inspiration\, and through intention and structure\, we shape that into something meaningful. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for the following projects*\, or you are welcome to bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nBlind Date with Collage: Let the chaos inspire you as you create a collage by choosing images\, materials\, and words from your pre-selected collage kit\, no planning needed! \n\n\n\nControlled Chaos Painting: Lean into the creative freedom of chaos by covering a canvas with spontaneous brushstrokes\, drips\, splatters\, and layered textures. For contrast\, mask off a section and add lines or other structured shapes to highlight the tension between chaos and order.\n\n\n\nOrder to Chaos Poetry: Start with a poem or another written work. Take it apart\, rearrange it\, tear it\, scribble on it\, paint over it\, or add bold colors and images. Remake it in your own chaotic vision.\n\n\n\n\n*During the summer months\, we will not have Creativity Matters packets\, but you can sign up to be part of the mailing list to start receiving them in the fall.

DESCRIPTION:Freedom\n\n\n\nJune’s Creativity Matters theme is “Freedom.” Together\, we’ll discover how freedom fuels creativity by opening the door to endless possibilities and true self-expression. Freedom encourages us to break boundaries\, trust our unique voices\, and create boldly\, without fear or limits. \n\n\n\nPlease note: starting in June\, Creativity Matters will be meeting on the first Tuesday of the month. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options C\, D\, and E from the monthly Creativity Matters packet*: \n\n\n\n\nInner Critic: Get freedom from inner critic. It can be harsh and loud\, but giving it a name and a face can help loosen its grip. Draw\, paint\, or collage your inner critic as a person. Give it a face\, a name\, imagine its size\, clothes\, and expression\, and add word bubbles.\n\n\n\nFour Values: Freedom isn’t just about fewer limits\, it’s about staying true to what matters most. Choose your top four core values\, find an object or person that represents each one\, create or find an image of them\, and hang them on a wall in your home.\n\n\n\nEscape Decision Fatigue: From illustrator Wendy MacNaughton\, this exercise uses simple rules to ease decision fatigue and invite creative flow. By giving up control\, we shift from directing the process to collaborating with it. Sprinkle red chili flakes (or similar small items) onto a blank page. Let them fall naturally. Outline each flake where it lands\, then enjoy the meditative practice of filling in the negative space with black ink.\n\n\n\n\n*Don’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? Mindfulness and meditation offer powerful tools to navigate these moments with clarity and compassion. \n\n\n\nFor our final session\, we’ll explore how loving-kindness meditation can become part of our daily lives. You may recognize its beautiful melody from our Sunday services—now\, we’ll practice extending compassion to ourselves and others\, deepening our sense of connection and care. \n\n\n\nEach session will include a period of silent meditation with gentle guidance\, followed by time to share your experience with fellow participants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Hosts\n\n\n\nLisa Stein is a recent addition to the UU Wausau community\, having returned to Wausau in early 2023 after living in Madison for 34 years. DESCRIPTION:C2: Coming of Age Cafe\n\n\n\nC2 is a unique coming-of-age space designed to honor youth choice and support them in taking ownership of their spiritual paths\, C2 is a space where youth can connect\, collaborate\, create\, and rest while exploring the deep questions of identity\, belonging\, and purpose. Each week\, the group will be invited to explore questions such as: \n\n\n\n\nHow do I honor the child I once was…and will carry with me?\n\n\n\nWhat are the labels and expectations our families put on us?\n\n\n\nWhere is the line between belonging and fitting in?\n\n\n\nWhat privileges belong to me\, and how do I use them to support the belonging of others?\n\n\n\nHow do I honor where I come from?\n\n\n\nHow do I celebrate the unique me?\n\n\n\nHow do I prevent labels from hemming me in?\n\n\n\nWhat are my core values?\n\n\n\nWhat are my passions and joys?\n\n\n\nWho do I hope to become?\n\n\n\nHow do we disagree without destroying relationships?\n\n\n\nHow do I resist “me-ism” and honor our intertwined fates?\n\n\n\n\nThen youth can choose how they’d like to go deeper with that week’s theme. Whether they choose to play a game\, make art\, enjoy a snack\, quietly reflect\, or simply relax\, C2 is an intentional time for youth to nurture their well-being\, explore those big coming-of-age questions as they move from childhood to adolescence\, and discover the answers together.

SUMMARY:Creativity Matters
DESCRIPTION:Joy\n\n\n\nApril’s Creativity Matters theme is “Joy.” This month\, we’ll explore how creative practices can help us connect with and cultivate joy in our lives. Together\, we’ll practice embracing joy through art and reflect on how joyful creativity enriches our emotional well-being\, builds stronger connections\, and invites more light into our daily lives. We hope you’ll join us in this exploration and discover new ways to bring more joy into your world! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProjects of the Month\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options B\, D\, and F from the monthly Creativity Matters packet* \n\n\n\n\nJoyful Words Collage – Find a selection of words that bring you joy – Buzz\, Boom\, Lollipop\, Squeegee – and use them to create a joyful collage.\n\n\n\nCreativity of Childhood Joy – Reconnect with joy through the creativity of your childhood with some of your favorite childhood mediums and art toys (fingerprinting\, playdoh\, construction paper\, etc.) \n\n\n\nJoy through Sumi-e – Also called black ink painting\, is a Japanese meditative art form that invites the artist to connect with the energy and symbolism of what they paint. One of its central images\, the orchid\, embodies the joyful energy of summer\, freedom\, beauty\, and peace. Try your hand at the orchid form with one of our tutorials or create your own joyful black ink masterpiece!\n\n\n\n\n*Don’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? Sign up to be part of the mailing list or reach out to our Director of Religious Education for a copy!
