SUMMARY:Date with Death Club
DESCRIPTION:What do we actually mean by the word death? The word conjures up a host of vague and troubling thoughts and emotions. At the literal level\, we recognize death by such obvious physical signs as the heart stopping\, the body not moving\, the cessation of breathing\, or flat lines on a screen. But that is only a small fraction of what the word death evokes. Beyond that very literal understanding of death\, we have all sorts of theories of what death is really about and all sorts of hopes and fears about it. We need to take a deep look at those hopes and fears and ask ourselves what exactly is it that we fear\, and what exactly are those hopes? The point of such questioning is not to come up with some “correct” view of death. Instead\, the point is to examine our own assumptions and beliefs\, whatever they may be – Judy Lief \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat if talking about death could help us live more fully? \n\n\n\nDeath is something we all encounter\, yet our culture often encourages us to avoid talking about it. This program offers a space to do the opposite: to become more comfortable talking about mortality\, dying\, grief\, aging\, and the many questions that surround the end of life. \n\n\n\nThrough conversation\, reflection\, poetry\, guest speakers\, and practical exploration\, we’ll engage both the big questions and the practical ones \n\n\n\n\nWhat makes a good life—and a good death? \n\n\n\nHow do we want to approach aging and our own mortality? \n\n\n\nWhat do different traditions believe happens after we die? \n\n\n\nHow can we prepare for the end of life? \n\n\n\nWhat choices do we have about our care\, our bodies\, and our memorials?\n\n\n\n\nSessions balance philosophical and spiritual reflection with informational and logistical content\, along with humor and earnest regard for the topic of mortality. While this is not a support group\, it is a space to be curious\, share what you’re comfortable sharing\, learn from one another\, and have honest conversations about something we all have in common: being mortal. \n\n\n\nDate with Death Club is a secular\, non-dogmatic exploration of mortality in community. It is open to adults -both members and the wider public. No particular religious belief or experience is needed\, and you don’t need to attend every session. Come for a single conversation or join us throughout the series\, and drop-ins are welcome. However\, we strongly encourage everyone to attend the first session as a way to begin getting comfortable talking about death and to establish a foundation for the conversations we’ll share throughout the program. \n\n\n\nBy facing the reality of our mortality\, we may discover new possibilities for living a more intentional and meaningful life. \n\n\n\nSession Themes: \n\n\n\n\n\nSep 10: Getting Comfortable with Death Talk\n\n\n\nSep 24: Dying\, Death\, Poetry\n\n\n\nOct 8: Good Life & Good Death\n\n\n\nOct 22: Resistance & Acceptance: The Mortal Dance\n\n\n\nNov 12: Aging: Better Than the Alternative\n\n\n\nDec 10: Grief: Loving & Losing\, Learning & Living\n\n\n\nJan 14: Afterlife / Afterlives\n\n\n\nJan 28: Facing Extinction: Processing Eco-Grief\n\n\n\nFeb 11: Owning Your Dying\n\n\n\nFeb 25: Hospice\, Palliative Care\, & End-of-Life Documents\, Oh My!\n\n\n\nMar 11: Medical Aid in Dying / Death with Dignity\n\n\n\nApr 8: What to Do with a Dead Body?\n\n\n\nApr 22: Planning Your Own Memorial Service\n\n\n\nMay 13: Writing Your Own Obituary\n\n\n\n\n\nSee session descriptions here. \n\n\n\n*Please note: there are no sessions on November 26\, December 24\, or March 25.

SUMMARY:Creativity Matters
DESCRIPTION:Courage\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCreativity is an act of courage. Every time we make something new\, we take a risk by stepping into uncertainty\, trying something we haven’t tried before\, and allowing ourselves to be seen through what we create. But creativity also helps us practice courage. When we give ourselves permission to experiment\, make mistakes\, and follow our curiosity\, we build the confidence to approach other parts of our lives with greater openness and resilience. At October’s Creativity Matters gathering\, we’ll explore the connection between courage and creativity through hands-on creative practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options B\, C\, and D from the monthly Creativity Matters packet* \n\n\n\n\nSuperhero Self-Portrait: Create a superhero version of yourself that highlights the qualities\, strengths\, and courage you carry within. Explore your personal “superpowers” through colors\, symbols\, words\, and images that represent who you are and who you hope to become.\n\n\n\nCourage Cards: Create courage cards with uplifting images\, colors\, and words of encouragement. Make one to remind yourself of your own courage and one to share with someone who could use a little extra encouragement.\n\n\n\nRole Model Collage: Create a collage honoring a person or people who inspire courage in your life. Explore the qualities they represent and the symbols\, images\, or objects that remind you of the courage they encourage in you.\n\n\n\n\nDon’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? Sign up to be part of the mailing list or reach out to our Director of Religious Education for a copy! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Creativity Matters?\n\n\n\nOur Creativity Matters group helps community members engage in monthly themes and explore spiritual growth through creative expression. \n\n\n\nIt’s all about allowing our intuition and imagination to guide us\, not just our logic and reflective minds. Think of it as making room for your right brain to dance with your left brain. \n\n\n\nCreativity Matters is a high school and adult group designed for everyone — no experience or artistic skill is required! Just bring a playful spirit and adventurous attitude.

SUMMARY:Creativity Matters
DESCRIPTION:Beginnings\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery creation begins somewhere: with a spark of an idea\, a moment of curiosity\, a first mark on a blank page\, or simply the willingness to try something new. Beginnings can feel exciting\, uncertain\, messy\, or even a little intimidating\, but they are also full of possibility. \n\n\n\nAt September’s Creativity Matters session\, we’ll explore the theme of beginnings through creativity. There is no need to have a plan or a perfect vision. Instead\, we’ll make space to experiment\, notice what emerges\, and reflect on the many ways new things come into being—whether it’s a work of art\, a new season of life\, a relationship\, or a deeper understanding of ourselves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options C\, D\, and E from the monthly Creativity Matters packet* \n\n\n\n\nOrigin Story Box: Each of us carries stories of where we come from\, the people and experiences that shaped us\, and the wisdom we carry forward. Create a personal origin story box using meaningful objects\, images\, and creative elements to visually explore your identity\, memories\, ancestors\, and the experiences that have helped make you who you are.\n\n\n\nBeginning Again: A Triptych of Forgiveness: A triptych uses three connected panels to tell a story\, with each piece contributing to a larger whole. Using the three stages of forgiveness (naming the harm\, doing the work of repair\, and reflecting on healing) and a medium of your choosing\, create a visual journey of a time when you experienced forgiveness\, transformation\, or the possibility of beginning again in love. \n\n\n\nThe Beginner’s Mind: Inspired by the Zen Buddhist practice of “beginner’s mind\,” this project invites you to approach creativity with curiosity\, openness\, and a willingness to try something new. Experiment with a new medium\, style\, material\, or creative process as you let go of expectations and discover what emerges.\n\n\n\n\nDon’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? Sign up to be part of the mailing list or reach out to our Director of Religious Education for a copy! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Creativity Matters?\n\n\n\nOur Creativity Matters group helps community members engage in monthly themes and explore spiritual growth through creative expression. \n\n\n\nIt’s all about allowing our intuition and imagination to guide us\, not just our logic and reflective minds. SUMMARY:Try Soul Matters
DESCRIPTION:Have you wondered what a Soul Matters Small Group is like? Join members of one of our current groups after the service on August 16 for a chance to experience it before deciding whether to join. You’ll get to participate in a sample conversation\, ask questions\, and learn how these groups foster meaningful connection\, reflection\, and spiritual growth. \n\n\n\nSoul Matters Small Groups (6–10 people) meet monthly from September through June to explore the big themes of our faith and our lives. Each month\, participants spend time with a question and a spiritual practice from the Soul Matters packet\, choosing the one that speaks most deeply to them. They then gather to share the insights\, stories\, and experiences that emerged through that reflection. \n\n\n\nIf you’re ready to join a group\, complete the sign-up form\, and our DRE will follow up with availability.

SUMMARY:Creativity Matters
DESCRIPTION:Revisiting Transformation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlways remember that the reason you initially started working is that there was something inside yourself that you felt that\, if you could manifest in some way\, you would understand more about yourself and how you coexist with the rest of society. – David Bowie \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust’s Creativity Matters session revisits a favorite theme – Transformation. Through simple creative activities\, we will explore how art and creativity have transformed us and helped us transform our world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe’ll have supplies on hand for the following projects\, and participants are always welcome to bring a project of their own to work on as well: \n\n\n\n\nScrap Collage: Explore the theme of transformation by turning our collection of paper scraps and materials from the past year into something entirely new. See what unexpected beauty can emerge when small pieces come together.\n\n\n\nFold-in Art: Create an image that transforms with a simple fold\, inspired by the classic Mad Magazine fold-ins. Play with perspective\, surprise\, and visual storytelling as one picture becomes another.\n\n\n\n5 Photographs: Using your own photographs\, or select images from magazines and our collection of photo and art books\, choose five images that capture something in the process of transforming. Then use the medium of your choice to alter\, arrange\, or combine them into a multimedia piece. This project invites you to slow down\, notice\, and explore the stories hidden within change.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Creativity Matters?\n\n\n\nOur Creativity Matters group helps community members engage in monthly themes and explore spiritual growth through creative expression. \n\n\n\nIt’s all about allowing our intuition and imagination to guide us\, not just our logic and reflective minds. SUMMARY:Saturday Art Hangout
DESCRIPTION:As spring gives way to early summer\, the world bursts with color\, growth\, energy\, and possibility. Join us for a relaxed morning of creativity inspired by the season’s abundance. Through collage\, painting\, art journaling\, mixed media\, and open-ended art making\, we’ll explore themes of blooming\, emergence\, wildness\, renewal\, and connection to the natural world. \n\n\n\nChoose a project that calls to you or bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nThe Garden of Possibility – Create a collage garden where each flower\, plant\, or growing thing represents a hope\, value\, dream\, or intention. Using images\, colors\, textures\, and words\, build a landscape that reflects what you are cultivating in your life and what you hope will bloom in the seasons ahead.\n\n\n\nAccidental Blooms – Start with random paint marks\, scribbles\, splatters\, or torn-paper shapes and see where they lead. Transform unexpected forms into flowers\, vines\, gardens\, and imaginative landscapes\, embracing surprise\, play\, and the creative possibilities hidden in every “mistake.”\n\n\n\nSunlit Blooms – Create colorful flower suncatchers using wax paper\, tissue paper\, and other translucent materials. Layer colors\, shapes\, and textures to design blooms that catch the light and bring a touch of the season’s brightness to any window.\n\n\n\n\nOur Saturday Art Gatherings welcome artists\, crafters\, and creative beginners alike\, and are open to adults and teens. We provide examples\, gentle guidance\, and a variety of supplies to spark your process. Participants are also welcome to bring materials from home to use or share at our community resource table! \n\n\n\nSuggested items to bring: \n\n\n\n\nNatural items: leaves\, petals\, small sticks\, seeds\, feathers \n\n\n\nInteresting textures: foil\, bubble wrap\, mesh \n\n\n\nStamps\, stickers\, or stencils

SUMMARY:Creativity Matters
DESCRIPTION:Flourishing Together\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJune’s Creativity Matters theme is Flourishing Together\, and invites us to explore ways to let our creativity flourish – making space for inspiration\, experimentation\, and unexpected directions as we notice\, shape\, and create what emerges along the way. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options A\, E\, and F from the monthly Creativity Matters packet*: \n\n\n\n\nWhat Makes Love Flourish: Create your own list of 7–9 qualities or elements that you believe make up love. Then\, using any creative medium you choose\, design an artistic piece that expresses your list and reflects what love means to you.\n\n\n\nTending the Garden of Self: Create a visual “garden of self” using collage\, paint\, watercolor\, or another artistic medium. Reflect on the elements that nurture\, challenge\, and shape your inner life by using garden imagery such as seeds\, plants\, tools\, weather\, animals\, and weeds to symbolize your strengths\, supports\, values\, struggles\, and areas of growth.\n\n\n\nThe Power of Creating Something Together: Work together to create painted craft-paper flowers that will become a collaborative art installation on our wall. Through shared creativity\, participants will contribute their own unique designs while helping build a larger piece that celebrates community\, color\, and collective expression.\n\n\n\n\nDon’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? Sign up to be part of the mailing list or reach out to our Director of Religious Education for a copy! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Creativity Matters?\n\n\n\nOur Creativity Matters group helps community members engage in monthly themes and explore spiritual growth through creative expression. \n\n\n\nIt’s all about allowing our intuition and imagination to guide us\, not just our logic and reflective minds. SUMMARY:Creativity Matters
DESCRIPTION:Awakening Curiosity\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMay’s Creativity Matters theme is Awakening Curiosity\, and invites us to follow our curiosity wherever it leads in our creative process\, letting questions\, wonder\, and unexpected interests guide what we notice and make. Through art\, we’ll explore new connections\, try new approaches\, and discover what emerges when curiosity is our starting point. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options A\, D\, and E from the monthly Creativity Matters packet*: \n\n\n\n\nCuriosity Collage: inspired by the packet’s Cabinet of Curiosity activity\, this activity invites us to create a visual collection of small\, intriguing objects and images arranged as if in a personal mini-museum.\n\n\n\nGetting Curious with Cards: Make art inspired by tarot or oracle cards\, following your curiosity wherever it leads. You might pull a card\, then use its imagery\, symbols\, or mood for inspiration in your art. Or skip the deck entirely and let curiosity guide you in creating your own original card from scratch.\n\n\n\nBeginner’s Mind Art: Create a series of artworks based on something ordinary or familiar\, approaching it with a “beginner’s mind.” Choose a simple subject and make multiple variations of it over time\, changing at least one small element each time. \n\n\n\n\nDon’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? SUMMARY:Saturday Art Hangout
DESCRIPTION:Spring brings a season of growth\, abundance\, and wild energy. This community art gathering offers space to explore imagination\, passion\, and the vibrant rhythms of the season through open-ended creative practice. No art experience is needed\, and all materials are provided. \n\n\n\nChoose a project that calls to you or bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nNature Masks: Create a mask inspired by the living world. Use color\, texture\, and natural items to explore identity\, transformation\, and the wild spirit of the season.\n\n\n\nWild Collage: Gather images\, textures\, and materials that catch your attention and follow your instincts. Tear\, cut\, and arrange them freely\, following intuition rather than a plan. Let unexpected combinations and discoveries guide your composition as it grows.\n\n\n\nAccidental Art: Embrace the unpredictable. Drip\, splatter\, smear\, and let materials move on their own. SUMMARY:Creativity Matters
DESCRIPTION:Embracing Possibility\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril’s Creativity Matters theme is Embracing Possibility\, and we’ll be exploring it through the imaginative world of Surrealism. Rather than sampling many artistic styles\, we’ll dive into this single movement\, which sought to unlock the possibilities of the unconscious and challenge the limits of rational thinking and “reality.” As you experiment with different Surrealist techniques\, you’ll be invited not only to create\, but also to reflect on where you may feel stuck\, the assumptions you carry\, and the new possibilities that might be waiting just beneath the surface. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options A\, D\, and E from the monthly Creativity Matters packet*: \n\n\n\n\nJuxtaposition Collages: Combine unexpected elements in a surrealist collage to challenge familiar assumptions and imagine a world full of new possibilities.\n\n\n\nAutomatic Drawing: Let go of conscious control and draw freely\, allowing your subconscious to guide the creative process.\n\n\n\nPossibilities of Dreams: Use the medium of your choice to bring your dreams to life\, exploring the hidden possibilities and truths they reveal.\n\n\n\n\nDon’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? Sign up to be part of the mailing list or reach out to our Director of Religious Education for a copy! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Creativity Matters?\n\n\n\nCreativity Matters is a drop-in small group for teens and adults to slow down\, connect\, and explore monthly spiritual themes together through art and imagination. \n\n\n\nIt’s less about skill and more about play\, allowing intuition\, reflection\, and creativity to guide us. Think of it as a gentle space where your right brain gets to dance with your left. \n\n\n\nEach gathering offers time for sharing\, creating\, and simply being together. No experience is needed. Just bring your curiosity and a playful spirit.

SUMMARY:Practices for a Lived UU Life
DESCRIPTION:Wisdom\, fundamentally\, is knowing who you are\, where you are\, and what you’re trying to do or be. – by Gordon B McKeeman \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiving our Unitarian Universalist values can be challenging in a world that constantly pulls us in many directions. Often\, we haven’t had the chance to fully articulate our faith or explore how it shapes our daily lives. This Adult RE series offers hands-on sessions to bridge that gap\, giving participants practical tools to bring UU values into everyday life. \n\n\n\nThrough guided exercises\, participants will explore ways to share who they are and what Unitarian Universalism means to them\, bring intention and meaning into daily routines\, and create space for rest\, renewal\, and hope. Each session provides opportunities for reflection\, small group discussion\, and gentle practice to help these ideas take root in real life. \n\n\n\nThemes: \n\n\n\n\nFebruary: Elevator Speeches – Articulate your personal story and UU values with clarity.\n\n\n\nMarch: Rituals for Everyday Life – Introduce intention and meaning into daily routines.\n\n\n\nApril: Sabbath & Rest – Develop practices that support balance and renewal.\n\n\n\nMay: Cultivating Spiritual Inspiration – Deepen spiritual reflection and sustained engagement.\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet on the last Wednesday of each month\, 6:30–8:00 pm\, February–May\, and each session is standalone; drop-ins are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Stirring Imagination: A Spring Art Gathering\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the beginning of Spring\, when light and dark meet in balance\, we gather for a time of creative expression. This seasonal art gathering invites participants to explore themes of emergence\, attention\, and the slow awakening of spring and imagination through art-making. \n\n\n\nChoose a project that calls to you or bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nBalanced Collage – Choose a few shapes and images\, then arrange them thoughtfully on the page\, paying attention to balance\, symmetry\, and open space. This project invites you to notice how separate pieces relate to one another.\n\n\n\nEmbroidered Mandala – Create a stitched mandala as a way to slow down\, focus\, and notice the present moment. Each stitch is a small\, intentional act\, helping you connect with balance and the rhythms of the season.\n\n\n\nSpring Egg Art – Decorate a wooden egg as a symbol of new life and possibility. Explore color\, pattern\, or meaning in whatever way feels right to you.\n\n\n\n\nOur Saturday Art Gatherings welcome artists\, crafters\, and creative beginners alike\, and are open to adults and teens.
