DESCRIPTION:Beginnings\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery creation begins somewhere: with a spark of an idea\, a moment of curiosity\, a first mark on a blank page\, or simply the willingness to try something new. Beginnings can feel exciting\, uncertain\, messy\, or even a little intimidating\, but they are also full of possibility. \n\n\n\nAt September’s Creativity Matters session\, we’ll explore the theme of beginnings through creativity. There is no need to have a plan or a perfect vision. Instead\, we’ll make space to experiment\, notice what emerges\, and reflect on the many ways new things come into being—whether it’s a work of art\, a new season of life\, a relationship\, or a deeper understanding of ourselves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options C\, D\, and E from the monthly Creativity Matters packet* \n\n\n\n\nOrigin Story Box: Each of us carries stories of where we come from\, the people and experiences that shaped us\, and the wisdom we carry forward. Create a personal origin story box using meaningful objects\, images\, and creative elements to visually explore your identity\, memories\, ancestors\, and the experiences that have helped make you who you are.\n\n\n\nBeginning Again: A Triptych of Forgiveness: A triptych uses three connected panels to tell a story\, with each piece contributing to a larger whole. Using the three stages of forgiveness (naming the harm\, doing the work of repair\, and reflecting on healing) and a medium of your choosing\, create a visual journey of a time when you experienced forgiveness\, transformation\, or the possibility of beginning again in love. \n\n\n\nThe Beginner’s Mind: Inspired by the Zen Buddhist practice of “beginner’s mind\,” this project invites you to approach creativity with curiosity\, openness\, and a willingness to try something new. Experiment with a new medium\, style\, material\, or creative process as you let go of expectations and discover what emerges.\n\n\n\n\nDon’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? DESCRIPTION:An art retreat for grounding\, creativity\, and renewal before the busy fall season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs summer begins to give way to fall\, we invite you to spend a day slowing down\, creating\, and reconnecting with what grounds you. \n\n\n\nEnjoy a variety of art projects designed to encourage reflection\, play\, and creativity at your own pace. \n\n\n\n\nSelf-portrait collage/mask\n\n\n\nNeurographic art\n\n\n\nSculpture that captures your center\n\n\n\nMake a labyrinth\n\n\n\nAltered book art journal\n\n\n\nMake a personal compass\n\n\n\nBring your own project\n\n\n\n\nThe labyrinth will also be available throughout the day for anyone who wishes to take a quiet walk. \n\n\n\nNo artistic experience is needed\, and the retreat is open to adults and teens.  \n\n\n\nWhether you’re looking for a peaceful day\, creative inspiration\, or simply time to recharge in community\, we hope you’ll leave feeling refreshed and ready for the season ahead. \n\n\n\nCoffee\, snacks\, and lunch will be provided. A suggested donation of $10 helps offset the cost of supplies and food\, but everyone is welcome regardless of ability to contribute. \n\n\n\nWhether you join us for the entire retreat or just part of the day\, we ask that you register in advance so we can prepare enough art materials and food for everyone. Through simple creative activities\, we will explore how art and creativity have transformed us and helped us transform our world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe’ll have supplies on hand for the following projects\, and participants are always welcome to bring a project of their own to work on as well: \n\n\n\n\nScrap Collage: Explore the theme of transformation by turning our collection of paper scraps and materials from the past year into something entirely new. See what unexpected beauty can emerge when small pieces come together.\n\n\n\nFold-in Art: Create an image that transforms with a simple fold\, inspired by the classic Mad Magazine fold-ins. Play with perspective\, surprise\, and visual storytelling as one picture becomes another.\n\n\n\n5 Photographs: Using your own photographs\, or select images from magazines and our collection of photo and art books\, choose five images that capture something in the process of transforming. Then use the medium of your choice to alter\, arrange\, or combine them into a multimedia piece. DESCRIPTION:As spring gives way to early summer\, the world bursts with color\, growth\, energy\, and possibility. Join us for a relaxed morning of creativity inspired by the season’s abundance. Through collage\, painting\, art journaling\, mixed media\, and open-ended art making\, we’ll explore themes of blooming\, emergence\, wildness\, renewal\, and connection to the natural world. \n\n\n\nChoose a project that calls to you or bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nThe Garden of Possibility – Create a collage garden where each flower\, plant\, or growing thing represents a hope\, value\, dream\, or intention. Using images\, colors\, textures\, and words\, build a landscape that reflects what you are cultivating in your life and what you hope will bloom in the seasons ahead.\n\n\n\nAccidental Blooms – Start with random paint marks\, scribbles\, splatters\, or torn-paper shapes and see where they lead. Transform unexpected forms into flowers\, vines\, gardens\, and imaginative landscapes\, embracing surprise\, play\, and the creative possibilities hidden in every “mistake.”\n\n\n\nSunlit Blooms – Create colorful flower suncatchers using wax paper\, tissue paper\, and other translucent materials. Layer colors\, shapes\, and textures to design blooms that catch the light and bring a touch of the season’s brightness to any window.\n\n\n\n\nOur Saturday Art Gatherings welcome artists\, crafters\, and creative beginners alike\, and are open to adults and teens. We provide examples\, gentle guidance\, and a variety of supplies to spark your process. You might pull a card\, then use its imagery\, symbols\, or mood for inspiration in your art. Use color\, texture\, and natural items to explore identity\, transformation\, and the wild spirit of the season.\n\n\n\nWild Collage: Gather images\, textures\, and materials that catch your attention and follow your instincts. Tear\, cut\, and arrange them freely\, following intuition rather than a plan. Let unexpected combinations and discoveries guide your composition as it grows.\n\n\n\nAccidental Art: Embrace the unpredictable. Drip\, splatter\, smear\, and let materials move on their own. Respond to what happens on the page rather than controlling it. “Mistakes” become part of the work\, opening space for surprise\, play\, and emerging creative directions.\n\n\n\n\nOur Saturday Art Gatherings welcome artists\, crafters\, and creative beginners alike\, and are open to adults and teens. DESCRIPTION:Embracing Possibility\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril’s Creativity Matters theme is Embracing Possibility\, and we’ll be exploring it through the imaginative world of Surrealism. Rather than sampling many artistic styles\, we’ll dive into this single movement\, which sought to unlock the possibilities of the unconscious and challenge the limits of rational thinking and “reality.” As you experiment with different Surrealist techniques\, you’ll be invited not only to create\, but also to reflect on where you may feel stuck\, the assumptions you carry\, and the new possibilities that might be waiting just beneath the surface. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options A\, D\, and E from the monthly Creativity Matters packet*: \n\n\n\n\nJuxtaposition Collages: Combine unexpected elements in a surrealist collage to challenge familiar assumptions and imagine a world full of new possibilities.\n\n\n\nAutomatic Drawing: Let go of conscious control and draw freely\, allowing your subconscious to guide the creative process.\n\n\n\nPossibilities of Dreams: Use the medium of your choice to bring your dreams to life\, exploring the hidden possibilities and truths they reveal.\n\n\n\n\nDon’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? Then you look at it closely and draw lines to small details that catch your eye. Next to each line\, you write a short note about what you notice\, wonder about\, or find meaningful.\n\n\n\nFinder Art: Use your Finder\, a piece of paper with a square cut out\, to frame and focus in on a detail. Draw or paint what you see\, repeating the process and noticing patterns in what captures your attention.\n\n\n\nSavor Collage: Pick a single word or idea – something like shadows\, circles\, benches\, rust\, or a color. Collect images of that idea\, noticing their details\, both the similarities and differences between them. Think of it as a gentle space where your right brain gets to dance with your left. \n\n\n\nEach gathering offers time for sharing\, creating\, and simply being together. No experience is needed. The 7th–9th grade curriculum creates a supportive space for youth to explore topics\, like: healthy relationships\, gender identity & sexual orientation\, sexual health\, consent\, and cultural influences on sexuality.  \n\n\n\nOWL encourages youth to actively explore and reflect on their own values\, attitudes\, and beliefs\, and through open dialogue and skill-building\, participants gain tools to make informed\, thoughtful\, and responsible decisions about their relationships\, sexual health\, and behavior. \n\n\n\nThis program is open to youth in grades 7–9 (or homeschool equivalent\, typically ages 12–14 as of September 1\, 2025) who have not previously taken OWL.  \n\n\n\nRegistration for this year’s OWL program is now closed. DESCRIPTION:Sparks of Light: A Mid-winter Art Gathering\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the heart of winter\, when the days are still short and the world feels quiet\, we gather to notice the first signs of returning light. This seasonal art gathering invites you to explore hope\, emergence\, and the subtle shifts of the season through creative expression. \n\n\n\nChoose a project that calls to you or bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nEmerging Light Collage – Cut or tear shapes representing light breaking through winter and what is emerging in you\n\n\n\nTissue Paper Lantern – Create a simple lantern that glows with your own symbol of light and hope for the season.\n\n\n\nArt Journal – Explore the things you want to “bring to light” in the coming season through your own journal pages\n\n\n\nCommunity Sunburst Mural – Using your favorite medium\, contribute a ray of light to a shared mural celebrating the collective emergence of warmth and possibility.\n\n\n\n\nOur Saturday Art Gatherings welcome artists\, crafters\, and creative beginners alike\, and are open to adults and teens. We provide examples\, gentle guidance\, and a variety of supplies to spark your process.
