DESCRIPTION:𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦-𝗠𝗲́𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresenter: Juanita Sundberg\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor Department of Geography\, University of British Columbia\, Vancouver\, Canada \n\n\n\nThe US border policies since 1994 have generated various forms of environmental injustice in the US-México borderlands. Specifically\, the 1994 border strategy enlisted rivers\, mountains\, and deserts as natural barriers in order to push people seeking to enter the US without inspection into areas deemed remote\, harsh and difficult to cross. This strategy has led to the deaths of thousands of migrants seeking to join or support family members. Likewise\, the strategy has destroyed other-than-human life-worlds by tearing up ecologies and enclosing animals in ever smaller enclosures. Addressing these intertwined forms of environmental injustice requires we attend to the way anthropocentrism upholds racism. \n\n\n\nBio of Dr. Sundberg:  Dr. Juanita Sundberg is Associate Professor of Geography and Latin American Studies at the University of British Columbia.  She got her PhD from the University of Texas\, Austin\, in 1999\, which was also the year she moved to Vancouver to work at UBC.  Dr. Sundberg’s work seeks to foster conversations between feminist political ecology\, critical Indigenous studies and anti-colonial approaches to examine environmental change in settler colonial societies in the Americas.  Dr. Sundberg is the daughter of Jim Sundberg who is a new member of the First UU Church of Wausau. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Us On Sundays For Services That Inform & Inspire\n\n\n\nSermons at UU Wausau encompass many topics\, but always with the intent of cultivating dialogue and fostering growth. DESCRIPTION:This Side of Nirvana:  Zen Musings on the Good Life\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresenter: Donna Keuck \n\n\n\nNo one ever said that Zen practice was easy.  It takes work\, which makes it an apt topic for Labor Day weekend!  Many texts and images guide this effort.  One of the most enduring is a set of ten Chinese paintings and poems from the twelfth century.  During this service we will take a look at these inspiring artworks and consider their meaning for our own lives.  In lieu of music\, there will be conversation and laughter.  Instead of a sermon\, there will be guided small group discussion.  Japanese sociologist\, Obaku Zen student and UU Wausau member Dr. Donna Keuck will act as the facilitator.  No one ever said that work can’t be fun.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJoin Us On Sundays For Services That Inform & Inspire\n\n\n\nSermons at UU Wausau encompass many topics\, but always with the intent of cultivating dialogue and fostering growth. DESCRIPTION:The Separation of Church and Hate\n\n\n\nUnitarian Universalists not only champion the separation of church and state but also the separation of church and hate. While religion should inspire love\, compassion\, and unity\, it can sometimes spiral into anger\, division\, and hostility. This Sunday\, we’ll explore how we can actively uphold the principles of love and goodwill\, ensuring that our faith remains a source of connection rather than division. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJoin Us On Sundays For Services That Inform & Inspire\n\n\n\nSermons at UU Wausau encompass many topics\, but always with the intent of cultivating dialogue and fostering growth. DESCRIPTION:Get Motivated…or Get Out of Your Own Way? – The Rev. Brian Mason\, preaching\n\n\n\nWe’ve all been told to “get motivated”—to summon the energy\, fight inertia\, and force ourselves into action. But what if the real problem isn’t a lack of motivation? What if it’s the barriers we construct\, the anxieties and perfectionism that stop us from letting action happen naturally? DESCRIPTION:Choosing Your Neglect – The Rev. Brian Mason\, preaching\n\n\n\nIn a world ruled by the tyranny of speed\, we’re urged to fill every moment and stay in the present. But what happens when demands outpace our time? This sermon invites us to purposely let go of what doesn’t really matter\, so life can show its meaning to us\, rather than us always trying to force our own. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nOctober Community Focus Collection (CFC): New Beginnings for Refugees\n\n\n\nOn the third weekend of each month during September – May\, our Sunday collection is given to a pre-selected Ministry Partner\, organization or cause\, like this one\, that puts our values into practice. For October\, our selected partner is New Beginnings for Refugees. \n\n\n\nEnglish Language Learners are a major focus of the New Beginnings for Refugees organization. The ELL program offers a unique service to our new families. It is the only place that provides free childcare while the students are learning. Whether Afghan\, Syrian\, Rohinga\, Ukrainian and more\, most of the mothers come knowing no English. ELL offers them a safe place within a like community of learners to take that difficult step of learning a new language. While they learn their children play in a safe environment and also learn the cultural expectations of their new homeland. DESCRIPTION:Gratitude. What’s Making our Hearts Glad? – Congregation\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAcknowledging the things in life for which we are grateful can be a great way to start a day or move us away from distractions keeping us from embracing the good. Before we let the Thanksgiving spirit dissipate into the Christmas bustle\, we will use our time together on 12/8 to share our gratitudes. This will be a congregation participation Sunday when all will have the opportunity to speak of something for which they are grateful. Maybe it’s church related\, or a special family member or friend. Perhaps an unexpected life event has brought you gladness or lightened your burden. Each individual sharing will add to our collective gratitude for making the decision to be present for one another for this service. Who knows? Maybe we’ll start a new service tradition.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJoin Us On Sundays For Services That Inform & Inspire\n\n\n\nSermons at UU Wausau encompass many topics\, but always with the intent of cultivating dialogue and fostering growth. We look forward to sharing this meaningful night with you and your loved ones. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAfter the Christmas Eve candlelight service\, there will be a cookie reception. It is suggested to bring a dozen cookies to pass and share with other members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Focus Collection (CFC)\n\n\n\nOn the third weekend of each month during September – May\, our Sunday collection is given to a pre-selected Ministry Partner\, organization or cause\, like this one\, that puts our values into practice. Our December 24 donation will go to the Neighbors’ Place. \n\n\n\nThe Neighbors’ Place is the largest food pantry and diaper bank serving north central Wisconsin. The Market food pantry prioritizes the dignity of choice and healthy food options through SWAP (Supporting Wellness at Pantries). This simple\, color coated system for organizing food is designed to make it easy for guests to make informed choices based on their dietary needs and health goals. The Babies’ Place was established in 2021 to address the growing need for diaper and period supply assistance. Currently\, there are no state or federal programs that assist with these essentials. Each month\, The Market serves over 2000 households through in person shopping or delivery and The Babies’ Place provides a supplemental diaper supply to more than 500 children.

DESCRIPTION:Sharing the Light Within – led by church member\, Mary Testin\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAt this darkest time of the year and a season of uncertainty ahead\, where do we find light and how can we share it to offer hope to others on their journey? \n\n\n\nAbout Mary: Mary Testin is a fairly new member of UU Wausau\, although she’s been singing in our choir for a year or so. She earned a B.A and M.A. in theology\, is certified in offering Spiritual Direction and chaplaincy. Raised in the Roman Catholic Tradition\, she served a variety of communities in liturgy\, education and social justice for 40+ years as a professional lay minister. She met several members of the UU when they volunteered to tutor the Afghan refugees. Impressed with both their commitment and friendliness\, she decided to look at their church which better met the liberal values of openness she was seeking. She is grateful to be part of the UU Wausau community. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin Us On Sundays For Services That Inform & Inspire\n\n\n\nSermons at UU Wausau encompass many topics\, but always with the intent of cultivating dialogue and fostering growth. DESCRIPTION:Brilliance is Overrated\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhat does it take to live with real compassion—not the feel-good kind\, but the kind that changes lives\, starting with your own? It’s probably not eloquence or cleverness but the gritty\, everyday work of showing up for others\, breaking down walls\, and finding meaning in the messiness of human connection. True brilliance isn’t in the spotlight; it’s in the quiet\, transformative power of kindness and care.

The Executive Director\, Tara Glodowski will be speaking. \n\n\n\nCommunity Partners Campus provides a single location for the provision of a wide range of human services by offering functional\, collaborative\, shared-space facilities for its nonprofit partners\, all of which have mission-driven purposes to serve disadvantaged individuals and families in the greater Wausau area. \n\n\n\nCommunity Partners Campus (CPC) helps its nonprofit partners meet their clients’ needs\, with an emphasis on food\, shelter\, medical\, mental health\, and social well-being. In addition to providing more services to more people\, CPC allows its partners to focus their efforts on their missions without the distractions of owning their own building or renting a facility at market rates that don’t truly meet their needs.

SUMMARY:Sunday Worship And Glorified Coffee Hour
DESCRIPTION:Meeting the Moment\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Unitarian Universalist theologian Rebecca Ann Parker writes\, “your gifts – whatever you discover them to be – can be used to bless or curse the world.” It can be overwhelming to be alive in times like these of political turmoil and climate change. How can we meet this moment with our gifts and blessings as well as our grief? \n\n\n\nAbout Melody: Melody Moberg is a member of UU Wausau\, a spiritual director\, and a candidate for Unitarian Universalist ministry.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJoin Us On Sundays For Services That Inform & Inspire\n\n\n\nSermons at UU Wausau encompass many topics\, but always with the intent of cultivating dialogue and fostering growth. On any given Sunday\, you will hear a sermon that stimulates your thinking about life\, opens a new perspective on the Bible\, or speaks to the state of the world with words of hope or healing. DESCRIPTION:It’s Me\, Hi\, I’m the Problem\, It’s Me – the Rev. Brian Mason preaching\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe all make mistakes—we’re only human\, after all. So why are we often so hard on ourselves and others? That’s where the church comes in—not to judge\, but to remind us that forgiveness is real and available to all of us. Together\, we can explore how embracing forgiveness can transform how we see ourselves and each other. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Us On Sundays For Services That Inform & Inspire\n\n\n\nSermons at UU Wausau encompass many topics\, but always with the intent of cultivating dialogue and fostering growth. SUMMARY:Sunday Worship And Glorified Coffee Hour
DESCRIPTION:No\, You’re Wrong—But Let’s Be Friends Anyway – The Rev. Brian Mason\, preaching\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nI know you think you’re right—but you’re wrong. (Of course\, you think I’m wrong\, but let’s not get stuck on details.) The truth is\, we’re never going to agree on everything\, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be in community. This Sunday\, we’ll explore how to disagree without being disagreeable—and why being right isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Focus Collection (CFC)\n\n\n\nOn the third weekend of each month (September – May)\, our Sunday collection is given to a pre-selected Ministry Partner\, organization\, or cause that puts our values into practice.
