DESCRIPTION:October Worship Series: What We Inherit\, What We Carry Forward – Universalists and Unitarians in the Midwest\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis October\, we’ll reflect on some of the people and movements whose courage and conviction helped shape the soul of our tradition. They were not perfect\, yet they were faithful — faithful to love\, to truth\, and to the hope of a more just world. Their lives invite us to ask: What do we inherit from them? What do we carry into the future? \n\n\n\nOctober 5: We’ll begin with Universalist theologian Hosea Ballou\, who insisted that authentic religion is not found in creeds or human inventions but in “the honest\, the pious\, the devotional heart.” \n\n\n\nOctober 12: We’ll explore the vision of the Transcendentalists\, who taught that outward forms may fade\, but the permanent in religion — truth\, justice\, and reverence for life — endures. \n\n\n\nOctober 26: We’ll turn closer to home\, looking at the significant contributions of Universalists and Unitarians in the Midwest. From frontier preachers to reformers who shaped civic and cultural life\, we’ll consider how their vision and persistence continue to ripple through our region and our tradition today.

DESCRIPTION:Where is the Wisdom We Have Lost in Knowledge? – The Rev. Michael Schuler\, preaching\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThose words were originally penned by T.S. Eliot for his poem “The Rock.”  They are quite old\, but more relevant today I would argue than they were when first composed (almost ninety years ago).   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Focus Collection (CFC)\n\n\n\nOn the third weekend of each month (September – May)\, our Sunday collection is given to a pre-selected Ministry Partner\, organization\, or cause that puts our values into practice. \n\n\n\nThis Sunday\, our collection will go to the Wausau Free Clinic. Our speaker will be Dr. Jeffrey Oswald\, who is the Medical Director of the Wausau Free Clinic. \n\n\n\nThe Wausau Free Clinic was started in 2018 in partnership with The First Presbyterian Church by Jeff Oswald\, MD\, Jeffrey Todd\, MS\, and Paula Vogt\, RN\, along with community volunteers. Although it has operated out of several locations over the years it has been located at the Community Partners Campus on Grand Ave.\, Wausau since December of 2022. \n\n\n\nThe mission continues to be offering no-charge high quality primary care services to low income\, uninsured residents of the area using highly qualified volunteers. From the 2024 annual report the patient panel is over 1400 individuals with 6000 hours of volunteer services have been provided valued at $500\,000\, \n\n\n\nCurrently the clinic has achieved “Silver Standards of Excellence” certification from the Wisconsin association of Free and Charitable Clinics and the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics.

DESCRIPTION:Life Believing In Itself – The Rev. Mark Richards\, preaching\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe are a nation divided by fear. Some say it is an existential fear of those who have a fundamentally different understanding of truth and reality.  Others say it is a manufactured fear\, generated by those seeking power playing on the unconscious prejudices of a distracted people.  We will explore the various relationships that exist for us in the personal\, social\, and political dimensions.  We’ll take a look at where our current divisions may have originated.  We wrap it all up with a reflection on how UU values can become a source for resolving our differences and bringing our nation back to its highest aspirations. \n\n\n\nRev. Mark Richards calls himself a wondering wanderer after seeing much of the world through a business lens.  His wandering landed him in Door County providing chaplain services for a local hospice agency.  After a few years settling in\, Mark’s social justice senses were revived by an offer to work with the Wisconsin UU State Action Network. Now serving as its President\, Mark is promoting UU values throughout Wisconsin to bring about our aspiration of a community that nourishes the spirit of every person.. Mark and Christina live in Egg Harbor and recently celebrated 50 years of marriage.

DESCRIPTION:The Mercy of Being Forgotten – The Rev. Brian Mason\, preaching\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe fear being forgotten\, and yet sometimes forgetting is mercy itself. History\, God\, or the universe holds more than we can carry—the good\, the bad\, and the unfinished. What does it mean to live knowing that we are part of a story far larger than our memory can hold? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Focus Collection (CFC)\n\n\n\nOn the third weekend of each month (September – May)\, our Sunday collection is given to a pre-selected Ministry Partner\, organization\, or cause that puts our values into practice. This morning’s offering will be donated to Healthy Opportunities for Latin Americans (HOLA) (https://holawisc.org) and we will have a representative of HOLA speaking at today’s service. To donate online\, text FirstUUWausau to 73256 or visit tinyurl.com/givetouuwausau. \n\n\n\nAbout HOLA\n\n\n\nSince their founding 2 years ago\, HOLA has served as a vital bridge for Latino families in 8 counties in Wisconsin improving access to healthcare\, legal services\, education\, and community resources. With your support\, they continue providing economic opportunity\, civic engagement\, and cultural connection.

DESCRIPTION:Lessons from Listening to Sargasso – led by Juanita Sundberg\, Associate Professor\, Department of Geography\, University of British Columbia\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, I offer lessons learned from listening to sargasso\, a seaweed currently landing in unprecedented volumes on Caribbean shores. Listening to seaweed\, I suggest\, challenges our imagined separation from nature and invites us into an ethics of attunement and interdependence. \n\n\n\nDr. Sundberg is the daughter of Jim Sundberg\, a member of the church.

SUMMARY:Sunday Worship And Glorified Coffee Hour
DESCRIPTION:From Blisters to Blessings\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEvery pilgrimage—whether across miles or through a season of life—leaves its mark. The journey can be long\, the load uneven\, and the blisters real. But along the way\, something shifts: we’re changed not just by where we’re going\, but by how we walk and who we walk with. This Sunday\, we’ll reflect on the sacred work of staying the course\, and how the most ordinary steps can lead to unexpected grace.

DESCRIPTION:Stuck on Repeat: The Stuff We Love to Hate – The Rev. Brian Mason\, preaching\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nWe say we believe in change—until someone actually tries to. This Sunday\, we’ll look at what happens when forgiveness is withheld like a prize instead of offered like a practice. How do we become people who believe in growth\, even when it’s slow and messy? And how do we deal with the temptation to freeze people in their worst moments… especially when it feels so justified?

By 3 or 4 months\, they’re laughing. And anyone who has watched a child knows about their awe and wonder. When life becomes a slog\, maybe it’s a hint for us to reclaim these underutilized parts of ourselves.Iain is an Ordained Elder in The United Methodist Church. We don’t livestream during the summer months\, but audio recordings are still available via our podcast!
