The roles we play\, the certainties we lean on\, the version of ourselves we’ve worked hard to maintain. On this last Sunday of Lent\, this sermon asks what’s actually load-bearing. What remains when the rest falls away\, and what it costs to find out. \n\n\n\nOur guest musician this Sunday will be Karen Zuidema\, the Musical Director for the Wausau ProMusica auditioned women’s singing group.  Joining her will be members of our UU Choir who are also part of ProMusica.  Zuidema is well known in Wisconsin for her many contributions to the state’s school choral programs.

As a congregation\, we continue to live our vision by volunteering at and donating to these influential community organizations and causes. \n\n\n\nThis month\, we’re proud to donate our Community Focus Collection to the Marathon County Humane Society. \n\n\n\nThe Humane Society of Marathon County (HSMC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been established in the Wausau area since the 19560’s. The vision of HSMC is a cruelty free community enriched by the special bond between people and animals. Our mission is to inspire and engage the community to end animal suffering and commit to responsible pet ownership. We achieve that mission by visiting schools to educate children on responsible pet ownership\, hosting low cost vaccine clinics on a monthly basis\, offering discounted microchipping services\, hosting fundraisers\, making our shelter pets visible in the community and more.  On average the shelter serves 1\,400 animals per year and we are always looking for creative opportunities to enhance our life saving efforts and bring the public to our shelter. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about their work here.

Eliot for his poem “The Rock.”  They are quite old\, but more relevant today I would argue than they were when first composed (almost ninety years ago).   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Focus Collection (CFC)\n\n\n\nOn the third weekend of each month (September – May)\, our Sunday collection is given to a pre-selected Ministry Partner\, organization\, or cause that puts our values into practice.   \n\n\n\nThis Sunday\, our collection will go to the Wausau Free Clinic.  Our speaker will be Dr. Jeffrey Oswald\, who is the Medical Director of the Wausau Free Clinic. \n\n\n\nThe Wausau Free Clinic was started in 2018 in partnership with The First Presbyterian Church by Jeff Oswald\, MD\, Jeffrey Todd\, MS\, and Paula Vogt\, RN\, along with community volunteers. Although it has operated out of several locations over the years it has been located at the Community Partners Campus on Grand Ave.\, Wausau since December of 2022. \n\n\n\nThe mission continues to be offering no-charge high quality primary care services to low income\, uninsured residents of the area using highly qualified volunteers. From the 2024 annual report the patient panel is over 1400 individuals with 6000 hours of volunteer services have been provided valued at $500\,000\, \n\n\n\nCurrently the clinic has achieved “Silver Standards of Excellence” certification from the Wisconsin association of Free and Charitable Clinics and the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics.

DESCRIPTION:October Worship Series: What We Inherit\, What We Carry Forward – The Transcendentalists\n\n\n\nThis October\, we’ll reflect on some of the people and movements whose courage and conviction helped shape the soul of our tradition. They were not perfect\, yet they were faithful — faithful to love\, to truth\, and to the hope of a more just world. Their lives invite us to ask: What do we inherit from them? What do we carry into the future? \n\n\n\nOctober 5: We’ll begin with Universalist theologian Hosea Ballou\, who insisted that authentic religion is not found in creeds or human inventions but in “the honest\, the pious\, the devotional heart.” \n\n\n\nOctober 12: We’ll explore the vision of the Transcendentalists\, who taught that outward forms may fade\, but the permanent in religion — truth\, justice\, and reverence for life — endures. \n\n\n\nOctober 26: We’ll turn closer to home\, looking at the significant contributions of Universalists and Unitarians in the Midwest. From frontier preachers to reformers who shaped civic and cultural life\, we’ll consider how their vision and persistence continue to ripple through our region and our tradition today.
