This week our donations go to Wausau Area Mobile Meals (WAMM).  Director Doris Spooner will be speaking on behalf of WAMM. \n\n\n\nAbout This Cause \n\n\n\nTo promote good health among the elderly\, convalescing and/or disabled members of the greater Wausau area by delivering hot\, nutritious meals with the help of volunteers. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWAMM Mission Statement \n\n\n\nWausau Area Mobile Meals delivers weekday meals to those individuals in our community who are homebound and ill\, disabled and/or elderly. We offer an opportunity for the recipients to remain in the familiar surroundings of their own homes as long as possible. All our meals are delivered by volunteer drivers and to serve the 90+ recipients we need 60 volunteers a week. We deliver meals in the greater Wausau area\, including Wausau\, Schofield\, Rothschild and parts of Weston. We know that proper nutrition is critical to those who are trying to age successfully\, and we provide selected menus for various dietary needs. Our meals are prepared at Aspirus Wausau Hospital and delivered by the volunteers to clients’ homes over the noon hour. A meal includes both hot & cold items. Along with the meal delivery\, there is a bonus “safety check”\, as the volunteer greets the client each day. This visit gives family members at a distance a feeling of comfort to know that their loved one has been checked on.

For October\, our selected partner is New Beginnings for Refugees. \n\n\n\nEnglish Language Learners are a major focus of the New Beginnings for Refugees organization. The ELL program offers a unique service to our new families. It is the only place that provides free childcare while the students are learning. Whether Afghan\, Syrian\, Rohinga\, Ukrainian and more\, most of the mothers come knowing no English. ELL offers them a safe place within a like community of learners to take that difficult step of learning a new language. While they learn their children play in a safe environment and also learn the cultural expectations of their new homeland. They also get an opportunity to acquire a few more household necessities from the New Beginnings Pantry. Read more about BBBS by clicking here. \n\n\n\nAbout Big Brothers\, Big Sisters of Northcentral Wisconsin\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBig Brothers Big Sisters of Northcentral Wisconsin has been serving at-risk youth since 1976.  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northcentral Wisconsin is the gold standard in youth mentoring.  By matching children with a positive role model\, we are building stronger communities one relationship at a time. \n\n\n\nBig Brothers Big Sisters serves children ages 6 through 14 that are struggling emotionally\, socially\, academically\, and behaviorally.  Currently\, our service areas include: Marathon County\, Abbotsford and the Merrill Area.  Our School-Based Program serves the districts of: Abbotsford\, Athens\, D.C. Everest\, Marathon\, Merrill\, Mosinee\, and Wausau.

Learn more about them here. \n\n\n\nThe Women’s Community \n\n\n\nOn May 19th\, Jane Graham Jennings who is the Director of The Women’s Community will join us to share information about the programs offered in our area for the Community Focus Collection. \n\n\n\nYou May Not Know All The Women’s Community DoesBecause violence knows no bounds\, The Women’s Community provides numerous programs to support survivors of abuse from varied backgrounds. \n\n\n\nMost people are familiar with the shelter program\, but the agency provides so much more.Sexual Assault Victim Services\, Criminal Legal System Advocacy\, Transitional Living Program\, Anti Human Trafficking Program\, Southeast Asian Advocate Program\, Abuse in Later Life Program\, Latinx Program\, Refugee Outreach Program and specialized services for victims who identify as LGBTQ+. \n\n\n\nAll services are free and available 24 hours a day.

DESCRIPTION:Typically\, on the third weekend of each month\, our Sunday collection is given to a pre-selected Ministry Partner\, organization or cause\, like this one\, that puts our values into practice.  This week we are moving the CFC to April 28. \n\n\n\nThis weekend’s Ministry Partner is the Marathon County Hunger Coalition. \n\n\n\n\nMCHC (Marathon County Hunger Coalition) is a United Way initiative that focuses on filling the gaps of food insecurity in Marathon County.\n\n\n\nMCHC invests $96\,000 into the Farm to Family CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. The food is purchased through Red Door and Cattail\, packed at The Neighbors’ Place\, and distributed at local agencies like The Neighbors’ Place\, First Presbyterian Church\, Boys and Girls Club\, First Covenant\, Community Center of Hope\, and The Women’s Community. Last year 2\,600 boxes were distributed.\n\n\n\nMCHC sets up a table at the summer Farmer’s Market for Market Gleaning. This is volunteer based and an MCHC member is also present. This means vendors and attendees of the market can donate produce that is then stored at The Neighbors’ Place and distributed through The Market and other pantries.\n\n\n\nMCHC’s invests $20\,000 into The Egg Program. This provides easy\, healthy protein to our pantry. Partners of this program are the Early Bird Rotary Club\, Kwik Trip\, and Ninepatch Farm. MCHC makes three purchases a month that agencies can pick up from us to distribute in their pantries as well as The Neighbors’ Place.\n\n\n\n\nTo donate online\, please text FirstUUWausau to 73256 or click here.

While this is usually a slower time of year for arrivals\, this year they are coming early like our spring weather. You can get an update on what’s happening as well as a very grateful thank you for all your past and future support. The collection will go to the pantry to enable it to continue stocking household goods for our newly arriving families from Burma\, Afghanistan\, Central Africa\, Syria and Guatemala and for setting up house kits for the new families.

The Day Center will initially be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 PM to 5 PM at the Good Shephard Shelter located within the Community Partners Campus.  Their commitment is to establish a sustainable program with the primary focus of building a capable team\, which involves hiring dedicated staff\, engaging passionate volunteers\, and forming partnerships with local service providers. The program’s ultimate aim is to expand operations to seven days a week providing a safe and supportive space for community members who are experiencing homelessness .
