This seasonal art gathering invites you to explore hope\, emergence\, and the subtle shifts of the season through creative expression. \n\n\n\nChoose a project that calls to you or bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nEmerging Light Collage – Cut or tear shapes representing light breaking through winter and what is emerging in you\n\n\n\nTissue Paper Lantern – Create a simple lantern that glows with your own symbol of light and hope for the season.\n\n\n\nArt Journal – Explore the things you want to “bring to light” in the coming season through your own journal pages\n\n\n\nCommunity Sunburst Mural – Using your favorite medium\, contribute a ray of light to a shared mural celebrating the collective emergence of warmth and possibility.\n\n\n\n\nOur Saturday Art Gatherings welcome artists\, crafters\, and creative beginners alike\, and are open to adults and teens. This Adult RE series offers hands-on sessions to bridge that gap\, giving participants practical tools to bring UU values into everyday life. \n\n\n\nThrough guided exercises\, participants will explore ways to share who they are and what Unitarian Universalism means to them\, bring intention and meaning into daily routines\, and create space for rest\, renewal\, and hope. She is grateful to have been invited to the UU by another member and now attends with her son and his family\, who are also new to the area. Lisa is a retired educator who brought mindfulness meditation and wellness to teachers\, students\, and school communities. She teaches a meditation program called Mindful Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).  \n\n\n\nJeanine moved to Wausau in 2020 and has been a part of UU Wausau since that fall when  Soul Matters groups met virtually; Jeanine was a Soul Matters group participant for 3 years. She participates in social justice activities and attends Margaret Jerz’s Drum Club. Jeanine has had an on/off meditation practice since 2010 and studies in the Tich Nhat Hahn tradition.

DESCRIPTION:Paying Attention\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch’s Creativity Matters theme is “paying attention.” Through reflection and creativity\, we’ll explore how what we give our attention to shapes who we are\, and how slowing down to notice art and beauty can change us. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options C\, D\, and G from the monthly Creativity Matters packet*: \n\n\n\n\nAnnoted Art: You start with a picture (one you find\, photograph\, or draw). Then you look at it closely and draw lines to small details that catch your eye. Next to each line\, you write a short note about what you notice\, wonder about\, or find meaningful.\n\n\n\nFinder Art: Use your Finder\, a piece of paper with a square cut out\, to frame and focus in on a detail. Draw or paint what you see\, repeating the process and noticing patterns in what captures your attention.\n\n\n\nSavor Collage: Pick a single word or idea – something like shadows\, circles\, benches\, rust\, or a color. Collect images of that idea\, noticing their details\, both the similarities and differences between them. This Adult RE series offers hands-on sessions to bridge that gap\, giving participants practical tools to bring UU values into everyday life. \n\n\n\nThrough guided exercises\, participants will explore ways to share who they are and what Unitarian Universalism means to them\, bring intention and meaning into daily routines\, and create space for rest\, renewal\, and hope. Each session provides opportunities for reflection\, small group discussion\, and gentle practice to help these ideas take root in real life. \n\n\n\nThemes: \n\n\n\n\nFebruary: Elevator Speeches – Articulate your personal story and UU values with clarity.\n\n\n\nMarch: Rituals for Everyday Life – Introduce intention and meaning into daily routines.\n\n\n\nApril: Sabbath & Rest – Develop practices that support balance and renewal.\n\n\n\nMay: Cultivating Spiritual Inspiration – Deepen spiritual reflection and sustained engagement.\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet on the last Wednesday of each month\, 6:30–8:00 pm\, February–May\, and each session is standalone; drop-ins are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Awakening Curiosity\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMay’s Creativity Matters theme is Awakening Curiosity\, and invites us to follow our curiosity wherever it leads in our creative process\, letting questions\, wonder\, and unexpected interests guide what we notice and make. Through art\, we’ll explore new connections\, try new approaches\, and discover what emerges when curiosity is our starting point. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options A\, D\, and E from the monthly Creativity Matters packet*: \n\n\n\n\nCuriosity Collage: inspired by the packet’s Cabinet of Curiosity activity\, this activity invites us to create a visual collection of small\, intriguing objects and images arranged as if in a personal mini-museum.\n\n\n\nGetting Curious with Cards: Make art inspired by tarot or oracle cards\, following your curiosity wherever it leads. You might pull a card\, then use its imagery\, symbols\, or mood for inspiration in your art. Or skip the deck entirely and let curiosity guide you in creating your own original card from scratch.\n\n\n\nBeginner’s Mind Art: Create a series of artworks based on something ordinary or familiar\, approaching it with a “beginner’s mind.” Choose a simple subject and make multiple variations of it over time\, changing at least one small element each time. \n\n\n\n\nDon’t have a copy of this month’s Creativity Matters guide? DESCRIPTION:Flourishing Together\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJune’s Creativity Matters theme is Flourishing Together\, and invites us to explore ways to let our creativity flourish – making space for inspiration\, experimentation\, and unexpected directions as we notice\, shape\, and create what emerges along the way. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options A\, E\, and F from the monthly Creativity Matters packet*: \n\n\n\n\nWhat Makes Love Flourish: Create your own list of 7–9 qualities or elements that you believe make up love. Then\, using any creative medium you choose\, design an artistic piece that expresses your list and reflects what love means to you.\n\n\n\nTending the Garden of Self: Create a visual “garden of self” using collage\, paint\, watercolor\, or another artistic medium. Reflect on the elements that nurture\, challenge\, and shape your inner life by using garden imagery such as seeds\, plants\, tools\, weather\, animals\, and weeds to symbolize your strengths\, supports\, values\, struggles\, and areas of growth.\n\n\n\nThe Power of Creating Something Together: Work together to create painted craft-paper flowers that will become a collaborative art installation on our wall. DESCRIPTION:As spring gives way to early summer\, the world bursts with color\, growth\, energy\, and possibility. Join us for a relaxed morning of creativity inspired by the season’s abundance. Through collage\, painting\, art journaling\, mixed media\, and open-ended art making\, we’ll explore themes of blooming\, emergence\, wildness\, renewal\, and connection to the natural world. \n\n\n\nChoose a project that calls to you or bring your own: \n\n\n\n\nThe Garden of Possibility – Create a collage garden where each flower\, plant\, or growing thing represents a hope\, value\, dream\, or intention. Using images\, colors\, textures\, and words\, build a landscape that reflects what you are cultivating in your life and what you hope will bloom in the seasons ahead.\n\n\n\nAccidental Blooms – Start with random paint marks\, scribbles\, splatters\, or torn-paper shapes and see where they lead. Transform unexpected forms into flowers\, vines\, gardens\, and imaginative landscapes\, embracing surprise\, play\, and the creative possibilities hidden in every “mistake.”\n\n\n\nSunlit Blooms – Create colorful flower suncatchers using wax paper\, tissue paper\, and other translucent materials. Layer colors\, shapes\, and textures to design blooms that catch the light and bring a touch of the season’s brightness to any window.\n\n\n\n\nOur Saturday Art Gatherings welcome artists\, crafters\, and creative beginners alike\, and are open to adults and teens. We provide examples\, gentle guidance\, and a variety of supplies to spark your process. DESCRIPTION:Revisiting Transformation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlways remember that the reason you initially started working is that there was something inside yourself that you felt that\, if you could manifest in some way\, you would understand more about yourself and how you coexist with the rest of society. – David Bowie \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust’s Creativity Matters session revisits a favorite theme – Transformation. Through simple creative activities\, we will explore how art and creativity have transformed us and helped us transform our world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe’ll have supplies on hand for the following projects\, and participants are always welcome to bring a project of their own to work on as well: \n\n\n\n\nScrap Collage: Explore the theme of transformation by turning our collection of paper scraps and materials from the past year into something entirely new. See what unexpected beauty can emerge when small pieces come together.\n\n\n\nFold-in Art: Create an image that transforms with a simple fold\, inspired by the classic Mad Magazine fold-ins. Play with perspective\, surprise\, and visual storytelling as one picture becomes another.\n\n\n\n5 Photographs: Using your own photographs\, or select images from magazines and our collection of photo and art books\, choose five images that capture something in the process of transforming. Then use the medium of your choice to alter\, arrange\, or combine them into a multimedia piece. DESCRIPTION:An art retreat for grounding\, creativity\, and renewal before the busy fall season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs summer begins to give way to fall\, we invite you to spend a day slowing down\, creating\, and reconnecting with what grounds you. \n\n\n\nEnjoy a variety of art projects designed to encourage reflection\, play\, and creativity at your own pace. \n\n\n\n\nSelf-portrait collage/mask\n\n\n\nNeurographic art\n\n\n\nSculpture that captures your center\n\n\n\nMake a labyrinth\n\n\n\nAltered book art journal\n\n\n\nMake a personal compass\n\n\n\nBring your own project\n\n\n\n\nThe labyrinth will also be available throughout the day for anyone who wishes to take a quiet walk. \n\n\n\nNo artistic experience is needed\, and the retreat is open to adults and teens.  \n\n\n\nWhether you’re looking for a peaceful day\, creative inspiration\, or simply time to recharge in community\, we hope you’ll leave feeling refreshed and ready for the season ahead. \n\n\n\nCoffee\, snacks\, and lunch will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Beginnings\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery creation begins somewhere: with a spark of an idea\, a moment of curiosity\, a first mark on a blank page\, or simply the willingness to try something new. Beginnings can feel exciting\, uncertain\, messy\, or even a little intimidating\, but they are also full of possibility. \n\n\n\nAt September’s Creativity Matters session\, we’ll explore the theme of beginnings through creativity. There is no need to have a plan or a perfect vision. Instead\, we’ll make space to experiment\, notice what emerges\, and reflect on the many ways new things come into being—whether it’s a work of art\, a new season of life\, a relationship\, or a deeper understanding of ourselves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProject Options\n\n\n\nWe will have supplies for Project Options C\, D\, and E from the monthly Creativity Matters packet* \n\n\n\n\nOrigin Story Box: Each of us carries stories of where we come from\, the people and experiences that shaped us\, and the wisdom we carry forward. Create a personal origin story box using meaningful objects\, images\, and creative elements to visually explore your identity\, memories\, ancestors\, and the experiences that have helped make you who you are.\n\n\n\nBeginning Again: A Triptych of Forgiveness: A triptych uses three connected panels to tell a story\, with each piece contributing to a larger whole. Using the three stages of forgiveness (naming the harm\, doing the work of repair\, and reflecting on healing) and a medium of your choosing\, create a visual journey of a time when you experienced forgiveness\, transformation\, or the possibility of beginning again in love. \n\n\n\nThe Beginner’s Mind: Inspired by the Zen Buddhist practice of “beginner’s mind\,” this project invites you to approach creativity with curiosity\, openness\, and a willingness to try something new. But that is only a small fraction of what the word death evokes. Beyond that very literal understanding of death\, we have all sorts of theories of what death is really about and all sorts of hopes and fears about it. We need to take a deep look at those hopes and fears and ask ourselves what exactly is it that we fear\, and what exactly are those hopes? The point of such questioning is not to come up with some “correct” view of death. Instead\, the point is to examine our own assumptions and beliefs\, whatever they may be – Judy Lief \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat if talking about death could help us live more fully? \n\n\n\nDeath is something we all encounter\, yet our culture often encourages us to avoid talking about it. This program offers a space to do the opposite: to become more comfortable talking about mortality\, dying\, grief\, aging\, and the many questions that surround the end of life. \n\n\n\nThrough conversation\, reflection\, poetry\, guest speakers\, and practical exploration\, we’ll engage both the big questions and the practical ones \n\n\n\n\nWhat makes a good life—and a good death? \n\n\n\nHow do we want to approach aging and our own mortality? \n\n\n\nWhat do different traditions believe happens after we die? \n\n\n\nHow can we prepare for the end of life? \n\n\n\nWhat choices do we have about our care\, our bodies\, and our memorials?\n\n\n\n\nSessions balance philosophical and spiritual reflection with informational and logistical content\, along with humor and earnest regard for the topic of mortality.
