The Rev. Brian Mason
Many of you may be familiar with the saying “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Summarily, it means you can tell a lot about a person by observing their conduct, allegiances, and interests. The great Unitarian theologian James Luther Adams wrote: “The quality of one’s associations determines the character and meaning of one’s existence.” In other words, “By their groups shall ye know them.” So much can be gleaned by learning someone’s associations. And so it goes for churches as well. Our conversation this morning will investigate the risks and rewards of voluntary associations, such as a church, and the very distinct way we UUs create and sustain them.
